April's shine - day 5/30: how do you nourish yourself?

4/4/2013

So,what do you feel "nourishing" means for you? Does it refer only to what you eat and drink? And is it confronting to look at what you put in your mouth with this kind of "glasses"?

Yesterday I was listening to Tim Ferriss  (the 4-hours "anything" guru) on YouTube. He said that the easiest way people become conscious of what they put into their bodies (aka food and drinks) is by taking a photo of everything you are preparing to eat. I kinda doubt that would work for me as I am visually oriented and I would probably see my pictures as art in place of the object itself:-) And I was wondering if some people would cheat and not take a picture of that chocolate cake..:-)
But he also said, becoming conscious of what you put into your mouth can start very small, with even as little as 2 weeks..
So I thought, two weeks seems easy to do..

That is why I want to invite you to look, together with me, at what we eat and do for the following two weeks.

Just look and notice if the thoughts you have about yourself are nourishing or they put you down.

Look at the food on your plate: is going to build muscles and make your body feel good - or do you eat it just for the fleeting seconds that it's touching your tong?..
You can also experiment with the Tim Ferriss method and take a picture every time something would land in your mouth..

Although, I believe that it's important to also look at the other stuff like the emotional or the physical activity we do or not do, the friendhips we have or not have..

That said,  here under my blogs for day 5 and, as usual, invite you to join me.

I have been trying to lose weight my entire life. I tried diets, and now I don't believe in them. Unless you are an actress or model, I don't think it is feasible to never eat a slice of bread or ice cream for the rest of your life. So I have been trying to change my eating habits instead. I have tried to write down everything that goes in my mouth and this exercise, when done for a long period of time, is very revealing. Ioana's idea to take photographs of everything you eat is even more visual, however I find it a little more disruptive to my daily routine than writing down, usually in an electronic document, what I eat. I have also been on and off on a spiritual path for a while, and when things go well meditation and centering of myself falls of the priority list. It shouldn't. I eat well, lost of salad and raw foods without having a raw diet. I am not into green smoothies yet, but I plan on getting there. I have a busy job which I am lucky to enjoy, but which spoils my Laura time a lot. I also have a 3.5 year old, but others have 5 children so I should not blame my lack of commitment to certain life changing activities to the time spent with my daughter. In any case, I wanted to thank Ioana for her inspirational thoughts, videos, recipes and suggestions. Good luck to everyone who is trying to make small or bigger changes in their life without going into another extreme and without forgetting to enjoy life with everything that it brings, even a slice of chocolate cake every now and then! :)

Dear Laura,
I am sorry to hear about your diet history.. I find it discouraging that the diets are everywhere and that so many women struggle with this and with lovingly being able to accept themselves because of a societal image we are fed everywhere we turn. I also struggled with this and of it was not for the image projected on me, if was my own desire to loose those extra kilo's..
What I write here is by no means the one only solution. Thank you for the suggestion about writing down what you eat. If it works for you, there is no reason to change that. I believe that if we find something that works, we should use it for as long as it's needed and until it does not longer work:-) The writing down did not work for me and I suggested taking a picture, but as I said in my article, I kinda doubt if that would work for me either..:-) I am just sending what I know in the air, for the ones who could use it..
As for the green smoothies versus the chocolate cake, I totally understand it:-) I am also at the moment not advocating only drinking green smoothies or being totally raw. I cannot do it in the setting and in the country I live in, and I would probably not be totally raw with my son even if I could. My son who is almost 4 eats what I eat and I want him to be healthy and eat a complete diet in any country we would find ourselves in. I found that for us it does not work eliminating the chocolate cake:-) When I allow myself to eat sugar, I do occasionally have a bite of my son's chocolate cake and he would not want to live without it, at the moment:-)
What the green smoothies are good for - and helped me do in my own life - is keeping a very high hydration and overall health that I never before experienced. I drink my 2l during the morning and for the rest of the day we eat organic as much as possible but we eat pretty much everything, raw and cooked.
And from what I read, you are committed to a lot of great things in your life, like your daughter and your busy job. Green smoothies have given me a lot more energy and me time so that is why I think they are so amazing.
And yes, thank you for pointing that out, I am by no means advocating any extreme here. Just hoping to add bits of pleasure to your lives with my tips.
love, ioana
